What is a softbox and what is it used for?
A softbox is a lighting accessory that is mainly used to diffuse and soften the light from an artificial light source. It is used in photography and video production to minimise harsh shadows and create an even, diffuse light.
What sizes and shapes of softboxes are there and how do they affect the light?
Softboxes come in different sizes and shapes, including square, rectangular, octagonal (often referred to as octa box) and more. Smaller softboxes produce a more concentrated light, ideal for detail shots, while larger ones provide a wider, more diffused light, which is beneficial for portraits or larger scenes.
What's the difference between a softbox and an umbrella?
An umbrella diffuses light more broadly and with less control than a softbox, which focuses light more tightly and emits it more directionally. Softboxes also offer more control over the direction and quality of light.
How do i mount a softbox to my light or flash?
Mounting a softbox can vary, but it is usually attached to the light source via an adapter ring. Some softboxes have quick release systems that make it easier to set up.
